Introduction to GCSE

GCSE stands for General Certificate of Secondary Education. GCSEs normally take two years(during school years 10 and
year 11) and you take the final exams when you’re 14 to 16. English, Maths and science are usually taken at GCSE level, but some schools will offer the other subjects at different levels. GCSEs are assessed mainly on written exams, although in some subjects may have coursework. GCSEs are at levels 1 and 2 on the National Qualifications Framework, depending on the grade you get. Exams usually take place in January and May/June and results are published in March and August.

Some GCSE courses are made up of units; for which a learner is tested at the end of each unit, while in other subjects the exams are conducted at the end of course.

Also for a subjects, everyone faces same exam paper. However on other subjects a student chooses to sit according to your choice of two tiers: ‘higher’ or ‘foundation’. Each tier leads to a different range of grades. Your subject teacher normally decides which tier is best for you. The GCSEs are graded A*-G and U (unclassified), whereas higher tier exams leads to grades A*-D and foundation tier exams leads to grades C-G.
